OUR STORY

Local & Permaculture Oriented

Established in 2009 by David Hancock, we started with the desire to produce poultry, food crops, and exotic birds. Our aim has grown to manage these in a manner that is both eco-conscious and in collaboration with nature rather than against it.

ABOUT HANCOCK NATURE FARMS

Our farm resides on 5 acres in the beautiful Hazelmere Valley- the heart of the Little Campbell Watershed. This area is one of the last undeveloped tracts of land south of the Fraser River and the traditional territories of the Semiahmoo, Kwantlen, and Lummi First Nations. The old agricultural fields and uncleared lands in the area provide refugium to many species of wildlife including bears, cougars, barn owls, swallows, red-legged frogs and many other species, including several species-at-risk.

We sit atop an old glacial deposit, providing both a fantastic view over the valley but also the many challenges that come with farming land with no shortage of stones! As with many farms in the area, our summer droughts provide great challenges for farming through the summer months and we rely heavily on natural, ground fed ponds, rain catchment and creative (and some primitive!) farming practices to allow us to maintain our crops throughout the year.

We rely on our resident goats to help keep weeds and blackberries in check, and our beehives to help pollinate all our plants and fruit trees. The lack of intensive agricultural and sprayed crops in the Hazelmere Valley have provided for ideal foraging grounds for our honey bees, and they are some of the most productive hives in the region as a result.

We have been spending the last several years trying to improve the property and our farm storefront. Please continue to be patient with us!

100% PASTURE RAISED, FREE RANGE & ALL NATURAL FED

We keep a variety of coloured egg layers including Australorps, Americanas, Copper Marans and Novogen Reds which have free reign over a 1/2 acre of pasture where they get fed scattered grains and a whole-earth feed. They have full access to various native herbs, grasses and weeds which they forage. The result is a flock of very happy hens!
